Richard Gendall's Cornish Protest Songs (2026) -PHYSICAL CD

£7.00

A five track EP with beautiful linocut artwork by Nic Zuppardi.

The songs on this E.P were written by Richard “Dick” Gendall (1924 – 2017) (apart from Smoking Chimneys, written by myself in 2010). Richard Gendall was a linguist, professor, Cornish Language pioneer, musician and writer. He wrote hundreds of songs for Cornish singer Brenda Wootton, two of which feature on this recording. Brenda released ‘Silver Net’ and ‘Theft of the Mackerel Shoals’ (written and released as Rape of the Mackerel Shoals) on her 1979 album ‘Carillion’. Poor Cousin Jack and Boat for Sale however were never performed or recorded by Brenda and are heard here for the first time. As the years have passed, the effects of second homes and the pressures of large scale trawling on Cornish communities have become increasingly clear, and both subjects are once again prominent in the media. Thanks to Jan Gendall for her support with this project.
